Google Experimental and Mouseless Computing

I noticed the "Google Experimental" link today at the bottom of the standard google search results page (http://www.google.com/experimental/), and "Keyboard Shortcuts" caught my interest.

This feature allows you to select the search result through the keyboard alone without the mouse.
Here are the keys (think vi).

Key Action
J Selects the next result.
K Selects the previous result.
O Opens the selected result.
Opens the selected result.
/ Puts the cursor in the search box.
Removes the cursor from the search box.

In opera I was able to add this to my standard search bar by the following steps.

1. Open Preferences
2. Click "Search" tab
3. Select "google" and click Edit
4. Click Details
5. Add "&esrch=BetaShortcuts" to the Address string
6. OK, OK.

Now you can browse search results with your keyboard.
(I tried to edit the address string in firefox 2, but it doesn't seem to have the option. I tried: select "Search bar Management" from the search bar drop down, but it looks like you can only add/delete, not edit. May be firefox 3 gives you more freedom)

My computing started in the DOS and BBS days and I still long for a mouseless experience. (All bbs menus were keypress driven, read up on the pre-internet days http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulletin_board_system )

As some extras here are some standard windows short cut keys.
My favorites are "WINKEY+D=Show DeskTop", and "WINKEY+E=Open File Explorer Window".

BTW - For programs I frequently use I use "Launchy" (http://www.launchy.net/) to keep my fingers on the keyboard.
